Who? Incoming 9th graders and up!
Where? Recreation Experiences (Recre) in the Appalachia region of North Carolina outside of Asheville.
When? Friday July 6th the youth stay at WUMC so that we can load up the bus the evening before and depart early morning Saturday. Saturday evening will be spent in a church in Nashville. The youth arrive at ReCre, Asheville, NC, on Sunday and depart the following Saturday (July 14th), spend the night again at a Nashville church and arrive in Austin on Sunday July 15th.
How? We have gone to ReCreation for the past 3 years and have enjoyed the road trip together every time! We have fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for students to go.
Why? To grow in our ability to Love One and Serve all.
What? While in North Carolina, the youth will be working on home repair for economically disadvantaged senior citizens. The group will do exterior house painting, re-roofing roofs, or digging/installing septic systems. The last couple years our group has also done some interior dry walling and painting.
The stay at Recre involves a lot more than just a service work. There will typically be about 200+ other youth staying at the Recre facility (an old rural k-12 school) with other church youth groups from throughout the South. Each morning a youth focused, fun, loud worship service kicks off the day just prior to going to your work site. Upon return after dinner, the youth are free to just hang out and mingle with the other groups. Our group will typically also have a short group devotional period in the evening.
The trip is not all worship and service. The work schedule includes 4 work days Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Wednesdays we have an off day in which we have typically gone to hang out at one or two of the numerous swimming holes in the North Carolina Appalachians. In addition, the last few years our group has taken off one evening for a sunset prayer service on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The youth thus get to see a different part of the country that is truly beautiful.Click here to find out more about ReCreation Experiences

Hey Ashley! Yes there were a couple spots that opened up, but it looks like you’ve already talked to Rich about signing them up! I see that we have Hugo as well as your friend Kara’s daughter (what’s her name?). Very excited to have them come along!
